IV. Reading Comprehension
Passage 1
Pronouncing a language is a skill. Every normal person is expert in the skill of pronouncing his own language, but few people are even moderately proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons for this, some obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the fundamental reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages very much better than they do is that they fail to grasp the true nature of the problem of learning to pronouncing, and consequently never set about tackling it in the right way. Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill that one needs careful training of a special kind. I think even teachers of language, while recognizing the importance of a good accent, tend to neglect, in their practical teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught; the teacher should be prepared to devote some of the lesson time to this, and by his whole attitude to the subject should get the student to fee that here is a matter worthy of receiving his close attention.
Apart from this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements for the teacher: knowledge and technique. It is important that the teacher should be in possession of the necessary information. This can generally be obtained from books. It is possible to get from books idea of the mechanics of speech, and of what we call general phonetic theory. It is also possible in this way to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those, say, of your students. Unless the teacher has such a picture, any comments he may make on his students’ pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use, and lesson time spent on pronunciation may well be time wasted.
_____ 1. There aren’t many people who are even fairly good about pronouncing foreign languages.
______ 2. The writer argues that going about the problem of pronunciation in the wrong way is a consequence of not grasping the problem correctly.
_____3. The best way of learning to speak a foreign language is by learning from a native speaker.
_____ 4. The teachers tend to forget to teach the principle of phonetic theory in the classroom.
______5. The value that student puts on correct speech habits depends upon his teacher’s approach to pronunciation.
Passage 2
This book has been written for two types of students. One is the student who is learning English in order to study some other subjects, in the arts or sciences, and who wants to learn how to write academic English. The other is the student whose main interest is English and who needs to learn how to write essays as a part of his school or university course.
As its title suggests, the book’s main aim is to teach writing. But each unit contains a passage of English, followed by exercises to make sure you have understood how that passage is organized. There is, in other words, quite a lot of reading practice. Why is so much reading practice given in a book on writing? Simply because you wish to organize your own essays correctly, it is important to understand how other writers have organized their passages. Answering questions like “ How is this passage organized?” and “ In what other ways could the writer have organized it?” is a useful step towards improving your own writing.
Each unit of this book is about a different subject. Unit two, for example, is about stars and planets, and Unit is about volcanoes. These subjects have been chosen because of their general interest, and you do not have to be an expert on each subject to follow the units. Even so, the student who is learning English in order to study some other subjects may ask whether he would spend his time better reading and writing about his own subject. This is not necessarily true. Essays, reports and articles have a lot in common, whether they are about chemistry or sociology. So the chemist and the sociologist can learn a lot about writing good English by reading and writing passages on subjects of general interest.
Whom is the book mainly designed for?
The main reason for much reading practice in the book is that readers need to know _______________.
Every unit in this book is mainly composed of _______ sections.
This book is useful for the students because it contains __________.
It can be concluded that this book is a _____________.
