Information Related to the Text
? 1,Florida and the Sun Belt
? Americans have a craze for the sun,The most
desirable place in the American sun is the
coastline of southern California, but Florida is
perhaps the most popular state in the Sun Belt,In
fact,it calls itself,The Sunshine State”,It has a
subtropical climate and is ideal for a winter
vacation,From November to March northerners
and easterners come to lie on the warm, sandy
beaches of Miami,Palm beach and the other
resorts along the coast,And that is why the boys
and girls in our story are so eager to leave the
“gray”,“cold” city of New York to vacation in
Florida,
2,Parole
It is a legal term, which means release of a
convicted(宣布,确信 ) criminal from prison before
he has served his full sentence,A parole is
usually granted to a prisoner as a reward for
good conduct,A paroled convict is a relatively
free man,but he is under the supervision of a
parole officer or some other person until the end
of the term of his sentence,The parole convict
reports regularly to the parole officers,He can be
sent back to prison if his conduct is not
satisfactory,
? Have you ever heard the American
pop song Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round
The Old Oak Tree? And do you like it?
This song, very popular in the States in
the mid-nineteen seventies,was born
out of the story Going Home,And
many of you may have been the
Japanese film Yellow Handkerchiefs
which also borrowed the plot from the
story,There is certainly something in
this story that appeals to artists as well
as readers,

Text
I first heard this story a few years ago from a
girl I had met in New York's Greenwich Village,
Probably the story is one of those mysterious bits
of folk- lore that reappear every few years,to be
told anew in one form or another,However,I still
like to think that it really did happen, somewhere,
sometime,

GOING HOME
They were going to Fort Lauderdale –
three boys and three girls-- and when they
boarded the bus, they were carrying sandwiches
and wine in paper bags, dreaming of golden
beaches and sea tides as the gray, cold spring of
New York vanished behind them,
As the bus passed through New Jersey, they
began to notice Vingo,He sat in front of them,
dressed in a plain,ill-fitting suit,never moving,his
dusty face masking his age,He kept chewing the
inside of his lip a lot, frozen into complete silence,
Back
College English
Deep into the night, outside Washington, the bus
pulled into Howard Johnson's,and everybody got off
except Vingo. He sat rooted in his seat, and the young
people began to wonder about him, trying to imagine
his life, perhaps he was a sea captain,a runaway
from his wife,an old soldier going home,When they
went back to the bus,one of the girls sat beside him
and introduced herself,
" We're going to Florida," she said brightly,"I
hear it's really beautiful,"
"It is," he said quietly,as if remembering
something he had tried to forget,
Back
College English
"Want some wine?" she said,He smiled and took
a swig from the bottle,He thanked her and retreated
again into his silence,After a while, she went back to
the others, and Vingo nodded in sleep,
In the morning, they awoke outside another
Howard Johnson's,and this time Vingo went in,The
girl insisted that he join them,He seemed very shy,
and ordered black coffee and smoked nervously as
the young people chattered about sleeping on
beaches,When they returned to the bus,the girl sat
with Vingo again,and after a while,slowly and
painfully,he began to tell his story,He had been in jail
in New York for the past four years, and now he was
going home,

"Are you married?"
"I don't know,"
"You don't know?" she said,
"Well, when I was in jail I wrote to my wife," he
said,"I told her that I was going to be away a long
time, and that if she couldn't stand it,if the kids kept
asking questions,if it hurt her too much, well, she
could just forget me,I'd understand,Get a new guy,I
said---she's a wonderful woman,really something---
and forget about me,I told her she didn't have to
write me,And she didn't,Not for three and a half
years,"
Back
College English
"And you're going home now,not knowing?"
"Yeah," he said shyly,"Well,last week,when I
was sure the parole was coming through,I wrote her
again,We used to live in Brunswick, just before
Jacksonville, and there's a big oak tree just as you
come into town,I told her that if she didn't have a new
guy and if she'd take me back, she should put a
yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I'd get off and
come home,If she didn't want me,forget it—no
handkerchief,and I'd go on through,"
Back
College English
"Wow," the girl exclaimed,"Wow,"
She told the others, and soon all of them were in
it,caught up in the approach of Brunswick, looking at
the pictures Vingo showed them of his wife and
three children -- the woman handsome in a plain
way,the children still unformed in the much-handled
snapshots,
Now they were 20 miles from Brunswick, and
the young people took over window seats on the
right side, waiting for the approach of the great oak
tree,Vingo stopped looking,tightening his face,as if
fortifying himself against still another disappointment,
back
College English
Then Brunswick was 10 miles, and then five,
Then, suddenly, all of the young people were up out
of their seats, screaming and shouting and crying,
doing small dances of joy,All except Vingo,
Vingo sat there stunned, looking at the oak tree,
It was covered with yellow handkerchiefs ---20 of
them,30 of them,maybe hundreds,a tree that stood
like a banner of welcome billowing in the wind,As
the young people shouted, the old con slowly rose
from his seat and made his way to the front of the
bus to go home,

College English READING ACTIVITY
Reading with understanding depends on the interplay of three factors, vocabulary
structure (grammar),and meaning,in other words, successful comprehension depends on
one’s actual command of the language,But generally a good knowledge of reading
techniques or skills will not only make reading easier, but also help improve reading
comprehension to a certain extent,
It is advisable to read a comprehension passage at least twice, the first time,to obtain a
general impression of the text, and then a second time to obtain a general impression of the
text, and then a second time to concentrate on the important details,Sometimes a third
reading is necessary—to check items that caused difficulty,
First Reading
Read the following text once,at your normal speed, trying to get a good general idea of
what the passage is about, and then do Exercise A,
Second Reading
Now read the passage again,This time, try to remember the important details and pay
due attention to points that seem difficult,If there is a word you are not familiar with,do
not waste too much time worrying about what it might mean,Just look at what comes
before and after, make an intelligent guess and then go on,When you have finished the
second reading,do the following multiple choice exercise,

Will Computers Take the Place of Teachers?
Will teachers be a thing of the past? American universities are now
developing computer- aided instruction (CAI),which may some day

Computers have become important tools in education,Colleges use
them for everything from record keeping to computer - aided instruction
(CAI) and even to the providing of guidance for career choices,
One of the best known CAI courses is the one on logic given at
Stanford University in Palo Alto,California,It is famous because it was
among the first CAI courses, and because it is taught entirely by a
computer,There is no professor, and there are no class meetings,
Stanford's logic course has a few special features,If the student
types "hint," the computer provides a clue to help find the answer to a
question,By typing "news," the student is told of any new
developments and changes in connection with the course,If the
student keys in "gripe," (抱怨 ) he or she can enter a complaint about
the course,
A survey of students taking the course showed that they
particularly liked to do the work at their own pace,Also, they found it
convenient to be able to use the computer terminals twenty- four hours
a day,six days a week,Although the Stanford students spent more
time on this logic course than on most of their other courses, they gave
it the highest possible course rating,

Jane is in her second year at college, but she is still not sure what career
she would enjoy after college,SIGI(System of Interactive Guidance and
Information),at her school,is helping Jane and other students to pick their
courses and plan their careers,
It took Jane nearly four hours at the SIGI terminal to answer all the
questions the computer asked,What are your strengths? What are your
weaknesses? What is important about you? Do you like to work outdoors or
indoors?
After getting answers to a number of questions, the computer screen
showed a long list of possible career choices,The computer then asked more
questions,The list of possible careers got shorter,
Next the computer compared the requirements for each career with Jane's
abilities and interests,It predicted how successful she would be in each
possible career,More questions narrowed down the field even more,They also
helped Jane to think more clearly about her future,
Toward the end of her time with SIGI,Jane was convinced that she
should follow a career in law,The computer suggested what courses she
should take to become a lawyer,It also drew up a list of both the rewards and
drawbacks(不利之处 ) of a law career,
