Prices determine how resources are to be used. They are also the means by which products and services that are in limited supply are rationed among buyers. The price system of the United States is a very complex network composed of the prices of all the products bought and sold in the economy as well as those of a myriad (极大数量) of services, including labor, professional transportation, and public-utility services. The interrelationships of all these prices make up the "system" of prices. The price of any particular product or service is linked to a broad, complicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less upon everything else. If one were to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define "price", many would reply that price is an amount of money paid by the buyer to the seller of a product or service or in other words, that price is the money value of a product or service as agreed upon in a market transaction. This definition is, of course, valid as far as it goes. For a complete understanding of price in any particular transaction, however, much more than the amount of money involved must be known. Both the buyer and the seller should be familiar with not only the money amount but with the amount and quality of the product or service to be exchanged, the time and place at with the exchange will take place and payment will be made, the form of money to be used, the credit terms and discounts that apply to the transaction, guarantees on the product or service, delivery terms, return privileges, and other factors. In other words, both buyer and seller should be fully aware of all the factors that comprise the total "package" being exchanged for the asked--for amount of money in order that they may evaluate a given price. 1. According to the passage the price system is related primarily to__________. A) labor and education B) transportation and insurance C) utilities and repairs D) products and services 2.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a factor in the complete understanding of price? A) Instructions that come with a product. B) The quantity of a product. C) The quality of a product. D) Warranties that cover a product. 3. In the last sentence of the passage, the underlined word “they” refer to“_________”. A) return privileges B) all the factors C) buyer and seller D) cash and credit. 4. The paragraph following the passage most likely discusses__________. A) unusual ways to advertise products B) types of payment plans for service C) theories about how products affect different levels of society D) how certain elements of a price “package” influence its market value Passage Two Question 1 to 4 are based on the following passage. London is famous for its museums-the British Museum, the Science Museum, and many more. One of the earliest museums in London was the Victoria and Albert, named after Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert. It was built in the 1860s, after Prince Albert and the artist Henry Cole decided that a collection of decorative arts of the world was needed as a teaching collection of students. The museum has now been collecting examples of decorative arts for over one hundred years and it is still an important source of ideas, inspiration and knowledge for today's students of art. The collection, which has accumulated over one hundred years is now so big that the Victoria and Albert has become one of the largest museums in the world. Education was one of the prime factors in the founding of the museum. Guided tours, talks and lectures are organized by the Education Department, so students of all ages can go there to learn from the work of artists and designers from other countries, “we talk to children in the galleries,” says Mr.Geoffery Opie of the Education Department, “and we tell them about the collection”. Students of art like to hear from someone who works in a museum, to get an idea of what such a job is like. Mr.Opie is a good guide, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the collection and its history. Nowadays the museum is in the center of London, but one hundred years ago it was in the countryside. “They built the museum here and they had nowhere to refresh the people who came to visit it, so they built the first museum restaurant”, says Mr.Opie. Visitors ate their breakfast in the Grill Room, which is decorated with tiles painted by students, depicting the seasons and months of the year .The aim of the museum has always been to display good design and to show the student show this would affect their own future work. 1. They built the museum__________. A) to collect examples of decorative art B) to teach the art students C) to hold talks and lectures for students D) to display good design 2. At the museum the Education Department______________. A) organizes talks and lectures B) helps students learn arts C) helps accumulate collection D) builds the first museum restaurant 3. The Grill Room is built for__________. A) depicting the seasons and months of the year B) displaying design C) dinner D) displaying art works of students 4. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A) The Victoria and Albert museum was the earliest museum in London. B) Education was not an important factor in the founding of the museum. C) The visitors found no place to have dinner at that time before the Grill Room had been built. D) Mr.Opie the first founder of the museum knew the collection of decorative arts very well. Passage Three Questions 1 to 4 are based on the following passage. Real policemen hardly recognize any resemblance between their lives and what they see on TV--if they ever get home in time. There are similarities, of course, but the cops don't think much of them. The first difference is that a policeman's real life revolves round the law. Most of his training is in criminal law. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court. He has to know nearly as much law as a professional lawyer, and what is more, he has to apply it on his feet, in the dark and rain, running down an alley after someone he wants to talk to. Little of his time is spent in chatting to scantily-clad (穿衣不多) ladies or in dramatic confrontations with desperate criminals. He will spend most of his working life typing millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, unimportant people who are guilty--or not of stupid, pretty crimes. Most television crime drama is about finding the criminal: as soon as he's arrested, the story is over. In real life, finding criminals is seldom much of a problem. Except in very serious cases like murders and terrorist attacks--where failure to produce results reflects on the standing of the police-little effort is spent on searching. Having made an arrest, a detective really starts to work. He has to prove his case in court and to do that he often has to gather a lot of different evidence. So, as well as being overcrowded, a detective has to be out at all hours of the day and night interviewing his witnesses and persuading them, usually against their own best interests, to help him. 1. The everyday life of a policeman or detective is ____________. A) exciting and glamorous B) full of danger C) devoted mostly to routine matters D) wasted on unimportant matters 2. When murders and terrorist attacks occur the police____________. A) prefer to wait for the criminal to give himself away B) spend a lot of effort on trying to track down their man C) try to make a quick arrest in order to keep up their reputation D) usually fail to produce results 3. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A) Generally the detective's work is over once the arrest has been made. B) Policemen feel that the image of their lives shown on TV is not accurate. C) People are usually willing to give evidence. D) Policemen and detectives spend little time at the typewriter. 4._________ could be a suitable title for the passage. A) Policemen and Detectives B) Detectives' Life-Fact and Fantasy C) The Reality of Being a Detective D) Drama and Reality
