With Christmas just around the corner, greeting cards are starting to appear in shops. But this year, paper cards are being left out in the cold as electronic (电子的) Christmas tidings become more popular. Last year, a top-grade Christmas card could sell for 35 Yuan, but now people won’t even pay 15. As the Internet increasingly goes into our daily life, online living is becoming fashionable among teenagers and e-greetings are becoming more and more popular. The major consumers of greeting cards in China are young people. They are always quick to accept the new lifestyles, so it’s natural for them to favor e-cards over traditional paper cards.
Not only are e-cards new and attractive, but also quick and efficient. Young people used to send each other paper cards at Christmas. But the problem is what to do with them all after that? Now they can save e-cards onto a disk (磁盘) and easily open and enjoy them at any moment. The Internet offers a wide variety of choices. Task 2
Directions: This task is the same as task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 66 through 70.
In ancient time the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poems aloud or giving speeches.
In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates(投考者)for the doctor’s degree.
Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all the students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the 19th century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers in an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines.
One type of test is sometimes called an objective test(客观试题). It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test, the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.
66. In the Middle Ages,students ______.

Task 3
Directions: This task is the same as task 1 and 2. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 71 through 75.
Every one is provided by nature with a set of fingerprints, entirely different from those of everybody else. It is now accepted as a scientific fact that no two people have the same fingerprints. The ten fingerprints of one person always differ from the complete set of another. But that is not all. The print of each separate finger of a person also differs from his prints of all other fingers and from the prints of other fingers in the world. Some one has calculated the chance that a print made by one person will be the same as the print made by another and the calculation shows that the chance is so small that for all practical purposes, it doesn’t exist.
The police, therefore, always record fingerprints, if possible, they are an unfailing clue(线索)to identity (身份) when once they have been obtained. Fingerprint identification as it is known and practiced today is of comparatively recent origin. It first came to the notice of modern police forces in India. Fingerprints were found so valuable there that they were later adopted by the police of other countries. They are accepted as legal evidence in a court of law; if a man’s prints are found on the scene of the crime (犯罪), it is taken for granted that he was there, though when and why he was there are other questions.
71. Select the statement that best expresses the main idea of the passage.
Fingerprints mean all in a court of law.
Fingerprints are important for scientific purposes.
