Doctors believe that second-hand smoke may cause lung cancer in people who do not smoke. Nonsmokers often breathe in the smoke from other people’s cigarettes. This is second-hand smoke. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (美国环保局) reports that about fifty-three thousand people die in the United States each year as a result of exposure (暴露) to second-hand smoke.
It is harder for children to avoid second-hand smoke. In the United States, nine million children under the age of five live in homes with at least one smoker. Research shows that these children are sick more often than children who live in homes where no one smokes. The damaging effects of second-hand smoke on children also continue as they grow up. The children of smokers are more than twice as likely to develop lung cancer when they are adults as children of nonsmokers. The risk is even higher for children who live in homes where both parents smoke.
People are becoming very aware of the danger of second-hand smoke. As a result, they have passed laws that prohibit people from smoking in many public places. Currently, 45 states in the United States have laws that restrict, or limit, smoking. The most well-known law doesn’t allow people to smoke on short native airline fights, i.e. flight within the country.
56. Compared with nonsmokers’ children, the children whose parents both smoke are likely to__________________.
grow up more slowly
be sick under the age of five
develop lung cancer more often
become smokers more easily
57. Why are there laws made against smoking in public places in the U.S.?
Because people have realized the danger of second-hand smoke.
Because more and more people don’t like smoking now.
Because parents don’t want their children to become smokers.
Because the government wants to limit the production of cigarettes.
58. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
The number of smokers’ children is twice greater than that of nonsmokers’ children.
People are now not allowed to smoke on airline flights in the U.S.
Adults whose parents smoked when they were children get cancer more frequently..
Second-hand smoke is not as dangerous as first-hand smoke.
59. From the passage we can conclude that__________________.
the main cause of lung cancer is second-hand smoke
most people know nothing about the danger of second-hand smoke
public places are dangerous for people to stay
children suffer most from second-hand smoke
60. This passage is mainly about____________.
how people get cancer
who can get cancer easily
what should be done with smoking in public
whether second-hand smoking can be harmful
Task 2 (5%)
Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions are numbered 61 through 65.
Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the students. If a long reading assignment is given, instructors expect students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. (Courses are not designed merely for students to pass examinations.) The ideal student is considered to be one who is motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. Grade-conscious students may be frustrated with teachers who do not believe it is necessary to grade every assignment. Sometimes homework is returned with brief written comments but without a grade. Even if a grade is not given, the students is responsible for learning the material assigned.
When research is assigned, the professor expects the student to take the initiative(主动) and to complete the assignment with minimal guidance. It is the student’s responsibility to find books, periodicals, and articles in the library. Professors do not have the time to explain how a university library works; they expect students, particularly graduate students, to be able to exhaust the reference sources in the library.
Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not be overtly dependent on them. (This differs from teacher-student relationships in other countries.) In the United States, professors have other duties besides teaching. Often they are responsible for administrative work within their departments. In addition, they may be obliged to publish articles and books. therefore the time that a professor can spend with a student outside class is limited. If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either approach a professor during office hours or make an appointment.
61. The ideal student is one what________________.
is interested in getting high grades
is grade-conscious
is anxious to have his assignment graded
is active to learn for the sake of learning
62. “Courses are not designed merely for students to pass examinations.” This means________________.
teachers want students to fail exams
teachers care only about exam grades
teachers believe that passing exams is not the only purpose of a course
teachers don’t pay much attention to exams
63. Professors who do not want their students to be too dependent on them for guidance usually expect_____________.
students to know all the answers
students never to seek professors’ advice
students to take the initiative and be independent
students to give them more time to relax
64. When research is assigned, the professor usually expects the student to complete the assignment______________.
with as much guidance as possible
with the smallest possible amount of guidance
without consulting the reference sources in the library
without discussing it with anybody else
65. The main theme of this reading is ____________.
the grade of assignment
teacher-student relationship
the duties of professors
independent learning
