6.5 Cleaning the Comyn oil/water
Separater
? To clean out the separator ensure that all oil possible has
been drawn off through the oil recovery valve and scum
valve, and that the separator is full of water.
? Turn on steam to heating coil; also steaming out
connection, and allow the separator to become thoroughly
hot.
? Pump clean water slowly through the separator, and
occasionally open oil recovery valve to free the separator
of any oil that is present,Use hand control cock during
this operation to open and close oil recovery valve as
required.

? Finally, open drain cock to bilge and continue to
pump clean water into the separator for a short
period,Close valve and leave the separator full of
clean water at all times.

? The automatic control system associated with all sizes of
Comyn Separator consists of a transistorized level control
unit, actuated by a probe mounted horizontally within the
oil recover dome,
? The level control unit which incorporates indicator lights,
is mounted,together with an ‘on/off’ fused switch,alarm
bell and terminal box,on a suitable panel attached to the
separator shell,
? The control panel is sometimes mounted at some position
away from the separator,The actuation of the level
control unit directly governs the opening and closing of
the diaphragm operated pressure closing type oil outlet
valve, via a suitable solenoid pilot control valve, which is
also mounted on and pre-wired to,the control panel.
6.6 Coalescing bed-type oily
water separators
CYF-B
Principle
? Oily water is pumped through a non-return valve in the inlet to the
separator; it enters the outer annular space and flows vertically
upwards towards the primary collection zone where the larger
globules of oil, which separate easily by gravity, collect.
? The water then flows downwards through the inner annular space
into the bottom of the separator, through ports into the coalescing bed
at a very low speed when the oil adheres to the granular material in
the bed and forms,in effect,a climbing film which moves upwards
through the bed at a slower speed than the water.
? The top of the bed is covered by a perforated plate,When the oil
reaches the underside of this plate it flows through the perforations
and due to its viscosity and surface tension, begins to form globules
which increase in size until they have sufficient buoyancy to float
upwards at a faster rate than the water and collect in the secondary
zone while the water flows through the water screen and into the
outlet pipe.
