Interesting as dolphins (海豚) are to scientists, it is their intelligence and sociability that have caught the popular imagination. Like whales (鲸), dolphins have a strong sense of family. A dolphin family is like a human family, but much larger.
Dolphins seem to be among the most sociable of all living creatures. They enjoy playing with each other and also with the humans, with whom they come in touch. It is this characteristic that makes them so easy to train as star performers. Besides, they seem able to remember humans that they have met even when there is a long period of time between meeting.
A sense of family and a spirit of cooperation appear to be very strong among all these marine animals. There are many recorded cases of dolphins supporting a sick animal on the surface of the water so that it will be able to breathe.
Language has always been considered unique to human beings. It now seems that the cetaceans (鲸目动物) may be able to communicate with each other through sounds similar to a real language.
Scientists are studying the behavior of the cetaceans, the sounds they send on and the physical characteristics of their brains in an effort to determine whether they really have the ability to communicate through language. It may prove that we’ll be able to establish real communication with another species for the first time.
31. Why should dolphins become popular with the public?
A. They are very interesting. B. They are very intelligent.
C. They are sociable. D. All of the above.
32. What characteristics make dolphins easy to train as star performers?
A. High intelligence.

Einstein had a great effect on science and history. An American university president once commented that Einstein had created a new outlook, a new view of universe. It may be some time before the average mind understand fully the identity of time and space and so on---but even ordinary men understand now that the universe is something larger than ever thought before.
By 1914 the young Einstein had gained world fame. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin (柏林普鲁士科学院). He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited opportunities for study, but soon his peace and quiet were broken by the First World War.
Einstein hated violence. The misery of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappy in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.
In the years following World War I honors were increasingly heaped on him. He became the head of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Theoretical Physics (德国皇家理论物理研究院). In 1921 he won the Nobel Prize, and he was honored in Germany until the rise of Naziism (纳粹主义) when he was driven from Germany because he was a Jew.

Task 3 (10%)
Directions: The following is an article about eye language. After reading it, you are required to complete the outline below it. You should write your answers briefly (in no more than 3 words) on the Answer Sheet correspondingly.
Americans are careful about how and when they meet one another’s eyes. In their normal conversation, each eye contact
lasts only about a second before one or both individuals look away. When two Americans look searchingly into each other’s
eyes, emotions are raised and the relationship becomes more intimate (亲密的). Therefore, they carefully avoid this, except
in appropriate circumstances.
Proper street behaviour in the United States requires a nice balance of attention and inattention. You are supposed to
look at a passer-by (路人) just enough to show that you’re aware of his presence. If you look too little, you appear haughty
(傲慢的) or secretive; too much and you’re inquisitive (过分好奇的). Usually what happens is that people eye each other
until they are about eight feet apart, at which point both cast down their eyes. In England the polite listener stares at the
speaker attentively and blinks (眨眼) his eyes occasionally as a sign of interest. That eye-blink says nothing to Americans,
who expect the listener to nod or to speak softly something---such as “mm-hum.”

This practice book is intended for foreign engineers of students of engineering who have already mastered the elements of English, and who now want to use their knowledge of the language to read books on their own subjects. Readers should understand, however, that the purpose of the book is to teach language, not to teach engineering.
The language in which scientific and technical facts are expressed is certainly not a different language from that of everyday life, but all the same it presents the foreign student with a number of special problems. The most obvious and the most widely recognized of these problems is the vocabulary. One of the aims of this practice book is to present as many technical words as possible, and as often as possible: words such as work and pain and load and feed and force. Words like these look harmless, but they can cause a lot of trouble to the student.
But more than anything else, I have tried to describe the technical statement; that is, the completed sentence rather than the individual word. Many of the structures illustrated in the book are essential to the expression of technical facts and ideas—at least for the present.
51. What’s the purpose of the book?
It is to __________________________________________.
52. What’s the most obvious problem to the foreign students of engineering?
It is ____________________________________________.
53. How does the “force” look?
