The market investigation is indispensable to sales promotion. They are as closely related as the lips and teeth, so to speak. What you produce is for sale on the market. It would be impossible to succeed in selling a product without first investigating the market.
In the international market, goods on sale coming from different countries and suppliers are always facing keen competition. Under such circumstances, they will try everything possible to familiarize themselves with the market conditions. In making investigations, we ought to get information about what similar items the competitors are offering on the market, what prices they quoting, what features their products have, who are their regular customers, etc. Then, how can we obtain such information? There are many channels that we can make use of in doing this sort of work. The commercial counsellor’s offices of our embassies stationed abroad can help us in making market investigations. Nowadays, our import and export corporations send their trade groups abroad every now and then. One of their purposes is to make market surveys on the spot.
Certainly, face-to-face talks with foreign business are also important channels to get market information. The Chinese Export Commodities Fair and some other fairs of similar nature as well as visits of foreign businessmen provide us with such opportunities. Of course, there are some other ways of making market investigations.

B. advertise his products D. do none of the above
2. The word “indispensable” in the first line means ____________.

4. Making market investigation is very important because __________.

Directions: This task is same as Task 1. You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
It has been thought and said that Africans are born with musical talent. Because music is so important in the lives of many Africans and because so much music is performed in Africa, we are inclined to think that all Africans are musicians. The impression is strengthened when we look at ourselves and find that we have become largely a society of musical spectators. Music is important to us, but most of us can be considered consumers rather than producers of music. We have records, television, concerts, and radios to fulfill many of our musical needs. In most situations where music is performed in our culture it is not difficult to distinguish the audience from the performers, but such is often not the case in Africa. Alban Ayipaga, a Kasena semiprofessional musician from northern Ghana, says that when his flute and drum ensemble (歌舞团) is performing, “Anybody can take part”. This is true, but Kasena musicians recognize that not all people are equally capable of taking part in the music. Some can sing along with the drummers, but relatively few can drum and even fewer can play the flute along with ensemble. It is fairly common in Africa for there to be an ensemble of expert musicians surrounded by others who join in by clapping, singing, or somehow adding to the totality of musical sound. Performances often take place in an open area (that is, not on a stage) and so the lines between the performing nucleus and additional performers, active spectators, and passive spectators may be difficult to draw from our point of view.
6. The difference between us and Africans, as far as music is concerned, is that ___________.
most of us are consumers while most of them are producers of music
we are musical performers and they are semiprofessional musicians
most of us are passive spectators while they are active spectators.
we are the audience and they are the additional performers
7. The word “such” in the sentence “In most situations…, but such is often not the case in Africa.” refers to the fact that ______________.
music is performed with the participation of the audience
music is performed without the participation of the audience
people tend to distinguish the audience from the performers
people have records, television sets and radios to fulfill their musical needs
8. The author of the passage implies that ________________.
all Africans are musical and therefore much music is performed in Africa
not all Africans are born with musical talent although music is important in their lives
most Africans are capable of joining in the music by playing musical instruments
most Africans perform as well as professional musicians
9. The word “nucleus” in the last sentence probably refers to _________________.
A. musicians famous in Africa C. musicians acting as the core in a performance
B. musicians at the center of attention D. active participants in a musical performance
10. The best title for this passage would be ____________.
A. The Importance of Music to African People
B. Differences Between African Music and Music of Other Countries
C. The Relationship Between African Music and Their Audience
A Characteristic Feature of African Musical Performances

Rather than fight the crowds in the Chicago and San Francisco areas, thousands of busy people log on (登录) to the Peapod, an online shopping and delivery service. Peapod is giving us a look into the future of retailing (零售业) ---the virtual store. Peapod is a pioneer in a rapidly expanding industry that is devoted to enabling us to buy almost anything from PC.
Peapod’s online shopping system is linked directly to its partner store’s computer systems, when you send your shopping list to Peapod, an order is delivered to the nearest partner store. A professionally trained shopper takes your order, grabs (抓) a shopping cart, and does your shopping for you. The professional shopper takes a fraction of the time you would take because the list is ordered by aisle (栏) and the shopper knows exactly what to get. The system saves people time and money.
Task 4 (5%)
Directions: After reading the following passage, you are required to fill in the blankets below. You should write your answers on the Answer Sheet correspondingly.
Most cities and/ or states in the U.S. collect a sales tax almost everything you buy. You must ask when you move into
new community how much the local sales tax is, and what items are and are not taxable. Both taxable items and the amount of tax vary considerably from place to place, from one or two percent in some places up to eight or ten in others. The New York City sales tax, for example, is currently 8%, so if you buy a pair of $ 40 shoes you will actually have to pay $ 43.20. This makes paying and getting correct change much more difficult. We say in America that only two things in life are unavoidable: one is death and the other taxes.
Another thing that makes money exchanges more complicated is tipping. Waiters and waitresses, cab drivers, bakers and all sorts of other people must be tipped. Their employers give them low wages because it is expected that customers will make up the difference. If you don’t, the service person can’t earn a living. Tipping also varies from place to place, generally in the area of 15% of your bill (before taxes), but again you should ask local residents whom to tip and how much.
16. What vary considerably from place to place?
Both _______________ and the amount of tax.
17. How much does the buyer have to pay if he buys a $ 500 washing machine in New York City?
He has to pay ________________________________.
18. What are the things that American people can not avoid?
___________________________________.
19. What can make money exchange more complicated in America?
It is ___________________________.
20. What is the consequence if people do not tip the service person?
The service people can’t _______________________.
