b. Difficult sentences in Text A
The pole vault is truly the highlight of any track and field competition. It combines the grace of a gymnast with the strength of a body builder. It also has the element of flying, and the thought of flying as high as a two-story building is a mere fantasy to anyone watching such an event.
His dad, on the other hand, was not a dreamer. Bert Stone was a hard-core realist. He believed in hard work and sweat. His motto: If you want something, work for it.
On one occasion she attempted to talk to him and his father about this, but his dad quickly interrupted, smiled and said, “You want something, work for it!”
He seemed unaware of the fact that he had just beaten his personal best by three inches that he was one of the final two competitors in the pole-vaulting event at the National Junior Olympics.
It was either the eruption of the people in the stands or
the thump of his landing that brought Michael back to earth.
It wasn’t because he won the National Junior Olympics and set a new record. And it wasn’t because he had just increased his personal best by 91/2 inches. It was simply because Michael Stone is blind.

2. Comprehension

(2) Summarize Text Organization
Part One (para1): The writer had three lives.
Part Two: (para2-3): The Writer’s first life.
Part Three: (para4-11): The Writer’s second life.
Part Four: (para12-29): The third life of the writer.
(3) Summarize General idea
The writer said he had three lives. The first one is from his birth to the days before he was struck by the disease. The second one is the nine years after he became ill when he lost love for life and others. The third one began from the day when a blind old man and a little girl changed the tire for him. From that day, the writer realized how selfish and indifferent he was, and he decided to love life and the world again.
3. Long sentences
I felt that if the day arrived when I was unable to life one foot up one step and then drag the other painfully after it---repeating the process 14 times until, utterly spent, I would be through---I could then admit defeat and lie down and die.
I believe that in this whole world I alone had been chosen to suffer.
In the next few frozen seconds the shame and horror of that moment penetrated, and I was sick with an intensity I had never felt before.
I realized that I was filled to overflowing with self-pity, selfishness, and indifference to the needs of others.
b. the theme-related language learning tasks (Part IV)
1. Group discussion
2. Essay writing
(1) How to write a personal description (2)
Writer’s Tone
To bring home the point the writer wants to convey to the reader, his/her tone—whether it is angry, sympathetic, amused or admiring about the subject---plays an important role in a personal description, as in the two texts we’ve just studies the authors’ voices can be heard now and then, directly and indirectly.
Opening/Closing Device
To arouse the reader’s interest or achieve better results, the writer usually designs the opening and closing paragraphs skillfully. AS we can see, in Text A the writer keeps the most important fact about Michael Stone until the last word, and in Text B the author begins his essay with reference to a common saying.
