Part II Reading Comprehension (40%) Task 1 A Check (a) What is it? Briefly, a check is an order in writing addressed to a bank signed by the customer authorizing the bank to pay on demand a specified sum of money to a named person. While it would be quite legal, if properly written, for a plain piece of paper to be used, it is now the established practice for special check forms, issued by the banks, to be made out. (b) Its purpose The purpose is simply to avoid the use of actual cash by substituting one piece of paper. A check is obviously far less bulky than a quantity of paper money or coin, so it is the ideal method of transferring money from one person to another, by post or by hand – much safer and easier. (c) Who can use it? Anyone who has a current account at a bank can use a check – including minors under the age of 18 years of age who are old enough to understand their use. Checks should, of course, be drawn only to the extent of the money – that is the balance – in the account or up to the limit of any arrangement made to allow the customer to borrow money. 21. Private universities have become very expensive because the government doesn’t help the private schools. Who pays? The parents of children in college may have to pay more, or often the students may have to find jobs. These students have to worry about assignments and grades and also about their jobs. If they work too much at their jobs, they may be absent from class or miss assignments or make to many errors on tests. They may even fail their courses and have to leave the university. For many students, the problem of getting an education is not just a problem of homework and exams. They also have to make money to pay for tuition.
