Bangkok
Place to see
The Grand Palace Complex is an interesting mix of Eastern and Western architectural styles. The Wat Phra Keo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) is in the Palace Complex and is the most famous temple in Thailand. The Palace is open every day and tours of the state rooms are available.
The National Museum is one of the largest and most enjoyable museums in Southeast Asia. It traces the history of Thai culture from 5,600BC to the present dynasty. There are 26 different structures and exhibition halls and none of them are air conditioned, so visit early in the day before it gets too hot. The museum is open daily except Monday and Friday.
Jim Thompson’s House provides an interesting insight into a foreigner’s love of Thailand and its people and arts. The house, actually three teak houses joined together, is open Monday to Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and costs B100 (which includes a tour in English or French).
What to do
Bangkok was once known as “the Venice of the East” because of its many miles of canals (klongs) throughout the city center. Visitors should experience at least one river trip during their stay, and a simple ferry crossing is an easy and inexpensive way of seeing something of river life. This will cost from B3-8 (11-30 US cents, depending on the length of the journey). There are also organized klong tours ---- ask your hotel for details.
One of the most rewarding tours begins at Tha Chang pier on board an express ferry to Nonthaburi. The trip takes about an hour and passes a number of wats (temples). When you arrive, be sure to take a stroll through the nearby open-air market.
Shopping
Bangkok is famous for its range of shops and the fantastic bargains which are available. Be sure to visit the Weekend Market near the northern bus terminal. There is a fantastic range of exotic items on sale here, but watch out for pickpockets! There are also excellent shopping malls and department stores.
A word of warning: it is illegal to try to take an image of the Buddha out the country.
