? When constructing the consumer price index, the Bureau of Labor
Statistics tries to include all the goods and services that the typical
consumer buys,Moreover,it tries to weight these goods and
services according to how much consumers buy of each item.
? Figure 23-1 shows the breakdown of consumer spending into the
major categories of goods and services,By far the largest category
is housing, which makes up 41 percent of the typical consumer’s
budget,This category includes the cost of shelter (28 percent),fuel
and other utilities (7 percent) and household furnishings and
operation (6 percent),The next largest category at 17 percent is
food and beverages; this includes food at home (10 percent),food
away from home (6 percent),and alcoholic beverages (2 percent),
The next category,also at 17 percent,is
? transportation, which includes spending on cars,
gasoline,buses,subways,and so on,Next are medical
care at 7 percent,apparel and upkeep at 6 percent,and
entertainment at 4 percent.
? The last category in the figure,at 8 percent of spending,
comprises other goods and services,This category is a
catchall for things consumers buy that do not naturally fit
into the other categories,Your purchase of this book, for
example, falls into this category,(Although books and
supplies for school may be a large part of your spending,
they make up only one –quarter of 1 percent of the
spending of the typical consumer.)
