Unit Three
Part I Language Structures
1.I think they should be told that their homework has to be checked before they hand it in. ———— In a passive sentence with the modal auxiliary have to, the passive verb phrase is formed by have/has to be +-ed participle.
2. Is she paid anything extra for overtime? ——— When this sentence is converted to an active one, it reads: Do they pay her anything extra for overtime? In this active sentence, there are two objects, the direct object anything and the indirect object her. When a sentence with a direct and an indirect object is converted to a passive one, usually it is the indirect object that becomes the subject of the passive verb. Thus,“Is she paid anything extra for overtime?” Of course it is not wrong to use the direct object as the subject, e.g.,
Is anything extra paid to her for overtime?
But this is not as common as “ Is she paid ….?” Moreover, note that when the direct object is used as the subject, the indirect object should be preceded by the preposition to.
3. I don’t think anybody should be made fun of … . ——— The passive verb phrase in this sentence is converted from the verb phrase make fun of. Other verb phrases in the v. + n. +prep. structure which can be converted into the passive voice include: make use of, take care of, etc,
