E-C Translation Skills
将被动句译成汉语的主动句;
将被动句译成汉语的判断句;
将被动句译成汉语的无主句;
1. Most of the questions have been sett1ed satisfactorily.
2. Large quantities of the fuel are used by modern industry.
3. English is spoken in Britain, the U.S.and some other countries.
4. It is considered of no use learning a theory without pracdec.
5. His house is located on the edge of the city.
6. During the World Cup our streets were filled with football fans.
7. This problem will be discussed at the next meeting.
8. This area is known to be rich in natural resources.
9. Candidates are required to present themselves fifeen minutes before the examination begins.
10. I remember being taken to Hangzhou by my father.
1. He wanted nothing but to stay there.
2. There was nothing to do but to remain.
3. They did nothing but complain.

I’m terribly sorry that I failed to come yesterday. I hope that this did not mess you up completely, although I know that you had already made some special arrangements for our meeting. I’m very sorry about all that. I’m sure you’ll be sympathetic, when I tell you that my father is dangerously ill in a hospital, and that I found it impossible for me to leave him when he is in that state. I hope you will accept my sincere apologies.

Their sitting-room was quite a big room, about 25feet long by15 feet wide. There was a thick carpet on the floor. Two water-colours hung on the walls, and there was a 1arge and very interesting oil-painting that I hadn't seen before. Them was a piano on one side of the room. There were three or four comfortable armchairs, a radio, and three or four bookcases filled with books. On a small table near the window, there were copies of The Times, Nevwsweek and some foreign newspapers and magazines. Mrs priestley returned with the roses in a bowl, which she put on the table, and a few minutes later Susan came with tea and a very nice cake.

Zoo supporters argue that zoos provide an educational service, but often the captive environment can be misleading. For example, tigers are solitary (独居的) animals which like space and privacy but if you go to a zoo you’ll often see them caged together in packs. Zoos may try hard to promote education and conservation to get themselves a better image, but few have a genuine education programme.
Another claim often made is that, if we didn't have animals in zoos, we wouldn't see them at all. But we aren't living in Victorian times Most of us have television and go to the cinema so we how what wild life looks like. If an animal is suffering by being kept in captivity, isn't it kinder to see it on a film?

I think it is a good idea for women to have a career and a family. There are many reasons. Firstly, if the woman works as well as the husband, the extra money is very useful. The family can have a better life more clothes for the children, maybe a new TV and so on.
Secondly, and more important, women are not just for looking after children. Women are just as good as men at almost everything, except things requiring strength.
Thirdly, some people say that a woman having a career is bad for family life but, as far as I how, there is no proof of this. In my opinion, it is just a story that men tell each other
Finally, as far as I am concerned, it is a woman's choice. She has the right to decide. If she wants to stay at home or go and find a job, that is her decision.
Questions: 1. What is the author's opinion about whether women should have careers and families at the same time?
2. List the reasons the author gives to support his view.

Drawing a Conclusion
Practice 1
Read the paragraph and answer the question that follows.
It is almost impossible to come up with a satisfactory definition of what constitutes (构成) a happy or unhappy marriage. One couple's happy compromise may be another's insurmountable stumbling block If we cannot define "good" and "bad" marriages, we can hardly expect to come up with figures about how many of each kind occur. But even if we rely on information that does seem to be measurable, for instance the number of marriages that end in divorce, we soon discover how complicated the task is.
From this paragraph, we can draw a conclusion that _____.
A. the number of good marriages equals the number of bad ones
B. most couples compromise about the same issues
C. more than one factor is responsible for marriage success or failure
D. people use the number of marriage failures to find out the reasons why some marriages fail

To turn to the question of employment, workers will on1y be needed on the project for a year or two and will have to find new jobs elsewhere after that. The project will not be of my lasting benefit.
