Analyze sentence structure (I)
? Logic within a sentence (first step in structure analysis)
? When your children are grown up they want to live their own lives,
and if you continue to be as interested in them as you were when
they were young, you are likely to become a burden to them, unless
they are unusually callous.
? The main clauses of the sentence are, they want
to… and… you are likely to…,,which is in co-ordination,For
the 1st there is an adverbial clause which is directed by
“when”,and for the 2nd there are two which are directed by
“if” and,unless”.
? Analyze another (structure of the sentence)
? Young men who have reason to fear that they will be killed in battle
may justifiably feel bitter in the thought that they have been cheated
of the best things that life has to offer.
? The core of the sentence is,young men...may...feel
bitter...”,” who” is the attributive clause modifying, young
man”,” that” is the objective clause of,fear”,” in the
thought that…, is the adverbial phrase,in which there is an
appositive clause of,thought”.
Analyze sentence structure (II)
? The order of parts in a sentence
? It does not do to live in memories,in regrets for the
good old days,or in sadness about friends who are
dead.
? The three,in” phrases are in parallelism,“it does not do”
shows the author’s idea, and the rest is the things the
author talks about,In Chinese the order of such kind of
express is often inverted.
? Another example
? … a successful old age is easiest for those who have
strong impersonal interests involving appropriate
activities.
