Confused by the sudden request is a past participial phrase used as an adverbial of reason,with its,the logical subject being that of the sentence,It may be rewritten as, As I was confused by…”
Example,Moved by his sincerity,the woman finally decided to marry the American businessman.
(Para,4)He didn’t believe that I had never used a computer until I explained that not many people used computers in Japan at the time,and many things were still handwritten.
他不相信我从未用过电脑。直到我向他解释那时在日本用电脑的人也不多,很多东西依然是手写的,他这才相信。
Not…until is a useful expression meaning,直到…才” in Chinese,with until introducing a clause or a phrase.
Example,He didn’t stop working until night.
(Para,8) What interested me most was the way Vietnamese concepts and values were translated into English.

What interested me most is the subject clause,while Vietnamese concepts and values were translated into English is a relative clause modifying the way.

Which startled me at first is a relative clause modifying expression,made by students upon…is a post-modifier used to modify response,upon,for and like are three prepositions,taking the gerund forms,upon being thanked,for performing…like cleaning…
Example,The few points which the President stressed in his report are very important indeed.
(Para,9) Colleagues explained that they wanted to perform this small service for me,and that I didn’t have to thank them,or even notice what they had done.

This is a complex sentence with four objective clauses,that they meat…is he object clause of explained,while that they wanted to perform… is the object clause of meant,The other two objective clauses are that I didn’t have to thank them and what they had done.
Example,I don’t think that they will be able to overcome the difficulties,and that they will regret what they are going to do.
(Para,10) While the transfer of those cultural values into English can cause misunderstanding and create unintended obstacles to successful communication,it can also be elucidating,providing valuable insights into a different value system.

While introduces an adverbial clause of concession,giving a contrast to the main clause it can also be elucidation,The present participial phrase providing valuable insights into a different value system is used as an adverbial,giving a further explanation of what it is said in the previous major part of the sentence.

(Para,4)He didn’t believe that I had never used a computer until I explained that not many people used computers in Japan at the time,and many things were still handwritten.

Not…until is a useful expression meaning,直到…才” in Chinese,with until introducing a clause or a phrase.

(Para,10) While the transfer of those cultural values into English can cause misunderstanding and create unintended obstacles to successful communication,it can also be elucidating,providing valuable insights into a different value system.
