Sentences,
(Para,1) I might have been physically safer staying home, but I certainly risked my financial well-being buying online.
我呆在家里身体上可能更安全,但网上购物在经济上肯定要冒风险。
The modal verb might plus have been indicate that something was likely to happen in the past.
Example,I thought that I might have been early enough to avoid the rush-hour traffic, but I was wrong.
(Para,2)…I picked up the local paper and saw a page one headline that read:” Identity thefts hit residents in region.”
我拿起当地报纸看到头版大标题:“本地区居民身份证屡遭盗窃。”
A page one headline means,a headline appearing on page one”,In the headline Identity thefts hit residents in region, the definite article the is omitted before residents and region, which is typical of newspaper headlines.
Example,I saw the big words in the title that read,Twin Towers” and,New York City”,
(Para.4) Amazingly, the ISP still responded that it was highly unlikely that security had been breached on its end, since no credit card data was in danger.
令人吃惊的是,这家因特网服务商仍然回答说,他们的终端安全受到破坏是根本不可能的,因为信用卡数据全都没有危险。
In the object clause that it was highly unlikely that security had been breached on its end, since no credit card data was in danger,it is a formal subject, while the following that-clause is the real subject, which,in turn,is supported by the since-clause of reason.
Example,It was highly unlikely that I would make it on time, but I was going to try.
(Para,5) From there I can only assume that they gained access to credit card data and any other information registered with the site.
由此我只能认为他们得到了信用卡数据和在网站注册的其他信息。
The word there refers to the information given in the former part of the paragraph,The participle phrase registered with the site is an attribute modifying any other information.
Example,Around December I was burdened with a lot of work,I felt extremely tied,From there I knew that I couldn’t take on this project alone.
(Para,6) But why is it this easy for attackers to steal our online information?
可是为什么攻击者窃取我们的网上信息如此容易呢?
The word this is an adverb meaning,so”.
Example,Why is it this hard to get a job as an engineer?
(Para,6) In more than 20 years of using charge cards at restaurants and department stores, not once has my credit card number been stolen—never mind used as a lever to unlock other financial accounts.
我在饭店和百货商店使用信用卡20多年了,信用卡号码一次也没有被盗窃过,更不用说用这个号码作工具去启用其他经济账户了。
When not once is put at the beginning of a sentence, the subject and predicate should be in a reverted word order,Has my credit card number been stolen is an example, with has before the subject my credit card number,Not once means, not even for once”,Never mind here means, not to speak of; let alone.”
Example,Any ordinary technician should know that, never mind the engineer.
(Para,6) Could it be that the e-commerce sellers,in their rush for higher income, oversimplify security so as not to discourage buyers.
是不是因为电子商务的卖家为了追求高收入,害怕吓跑客户而过分简化了安全措施呢?
The pronoun it is the formal subject, and that-clause is the real subject clause, where to income modifies rush and so as to discourage buyers serves as an adverbial of purpose.
Example,Could it be that they are not aware of what they are doing?
2,Retelling the passage
Ask students to read the passage again,
Ask them to retell the passage in their own words,
