(Para,3) Although they both speak Spanish,it happened that as arrangements were being made over the telephone,they inadvertently agreed to meet at different places.

In it happened that…,it is the formal subject,and the real subject is the that-clause,As is a conjunction introducing an adverbial clause of cause,to point out why they made a mistake in going to different places.

The phrase cannot help but do sth or cannot help( doing ) sth means,it is impossible to prevent or avoid sth”
